WHAT IS A BREAST LIFT (MASTOPEXY)?
For patients who are satisfied with the size of their breasts, but wish to raise and lift their breasts to a more aesthetically desirable position, breast lift surgery (mastopexy) may be the best option. Breast lift procedures are performed to correct the condition of ptosis—sagging or drooping of the breasts caused by the loss of elasticity in the breast tissue. Breast lift procedures counteract the symptoms of ptosis by removing surplus skin, tightening the breast tissue, and building a more supportive structure to maintain the newly raised and lifted shape of the breasts.
Mastopexy procedures are also performed to treat and correct breast-related issues such as enlarged areolas, downward pointing nipples, stretched skin, and asymmetrical breasts. It is important to mention that breast lifts do not increase the size, volume, or fullness or of the breasts. If your aesthetic goals include augmenting the size of your breasts in addition to lifting and raising your breasts, a breast augmentation performed in conjunction with a breast lift would be a more effective option.
WHAT CAUSES BREASTS TO SAG?
Breast ptosis (sagging) is exacerbated by a number of factors.
- Age: As a result of the natural aging process and the effects of gravity, the skin and support structures of the breasts lose their elasticity over time, beginning to stretch, sag, and lose their youthful, ‘perky’ appearance.
- Congenital Issue: Some women are genetically predisposed to develop breasts that sag and/or have downward pointing nipples.
- Weight loss: When women lose weight their breasts decrease in volume, which can cause sagging of the breasts if the breast tissues and support structures do not have enough elasticity to reform to the smaller post-weight loss breast shape.
- Post-pregnancy: During pregnancy and nursing, the breasts become engorged with milk, and must stretch to accommodate the increase in volume. When pregnancy and breast feeding have concluded, the significant loss in breast volume can cause considerable drooping and sagging of the breasts.
Although breast sagging is part of the natural aging process and is something most women experience during their lives, breast lifts are an effective means of correcting sagging breasts. A breast lift can restore breasts to a perky, youthful appearance. Dr. J. Timothy Katzen is a knowledgeable, board certified plastic surgeon with years of experienced performing breast lift procedures at his private practice in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Katzen stays up to date with the latest developments in breast surgery technology in order to provide his patients with beautifully natural-looking mastopexy results.
BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
Mastopexy is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or IV sedation. Different breasts require different types of breast lifts. Some breasts require a small lift, whereas breasts with more sag or ptosis require a more extensive breast lift. In general, the more ptosis or sag, the longer the incision required to achieve a satisfactory breast lift. There are four major types of breast lifts, namely the crescent lift, periareolar, vertical or lollipop lift, and the anchor breast lift. After evaluating your anatomy, degree of ptosis and surgical goals, Dr. Katzen will select the appropriate breast lift procedure to ensure that you achieve optimal results. Following your surgery, Dr. Katzen will place bandages or dressings over your incisions, and you will be advised to wear a support bra to minimize post-operative swelling, and to facilitate the healing process. Most patients find that they can gradually return to their normal daily routine, but you will need to avoid vigorous exercise and heavy lifting for the first few months after your procedure.
Dr. Katzen’s practice is built on the foundational principle of surgical customization, meaning that as a patient, you will receive a unique treatment plan, tailored to reflect your specific aesthetic preferences, and to bring your surgical goals to fruition.
