MOTIVATION FOR MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY
Male breast reduction surgery is performed to treat and correct large male breasts. There are several leading causes of excess male breast tissue. The most common cause of excess male breast tissue is gynecomastia. Gynecomastia accounts for 65% of the surgical cases requiring male breast reduction.
Gynecomastia may affect one or both male breasts. Gynecomastia cannot be ameliorated through exercise or dieting alone. The breasts of an individual suffering from gynecomastia become enlarged when the patient’s body produces surplus glandular breast tissue. There are many causes of gynecomastia including congenital illnesses, certain medications, drugs and hormonal shifts. In most cases of gynecomastia, the cause remains unknown.
Another common cause of male breasts is accumulation of male breast fatty tissue. This can be due to localized fat deposition in the male breast, obesity, or after significant weight loss. Although the presence of male breasts do not pose serious health risks, male breasts can be extremely detrimental to self-esteem and self-confidence. The presence of male breasts can potentially lead to heightened levels of anxiety and embarrassment. As modern society has become increasingly aware about the condition of gynecomastia, and the taboo around male plastic surgery has declined, male breast reduction surgery has become an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. When selecting a doctor to perform your gynecomastia correction surgery, it is essential to find an experienced and board certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. J. Timothy Katzen, who understands the importance of continuous education in the constantly evolving field of plastic surgery. At his private practice in Beverly Hills, CA, Dr. Katzen has helped many of his male patients improve the contours of their chest, and restore their self-confidence with gynecomastia correction surgery. Dr. Katzen takes pride in staying current with the latest developments in cosmetic surgical technology, in order to provide his patients with optimal results and the shortest possible recovery periods following their surgeries.
MALE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE
The details of each patient’s gynecomastia correction surgery will be dependent upon the severity of the symptoms, and whether the root cause of the breast enlargement is excess fatty tissue, excess glandular tissue, or a combination of both. If the primary cause of the gynecomastia is excess glandular tissue, Dr. Katzen will make incisions in the breast region, and utilize surgical excision techniques to remove the excess tissue. If the breast enlargement is also caused by excess fatty tissue Dr. Katzen will incorporate liposuction techniques (either alone, or in conjunction with excision techniques) during the surgery.
Gynecomastia correction surgery is performed under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dressings or bandages will be placed over the incisions after surgery, and a support garment or elastic bandage will be utilized to diminish any post-surgical swelling, while a small drain may be placed under the skin to remove excess fluid or blood. The results of male breast reduction surgery are permanent; however, if a patient gains a substantial amount of weight, or begins to take a medication or drug known to aggravate the condition of gynecomastia, the symptoms may reoccur.
