What is Botox?
Botox, originally referred to as Botulinum Toxin Type A, is a prescription neurotoxin injected into the muscles of the face to improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. Botox functions by blocking the nerve impulses within the targeted muscle, thereby relaxing the muscle and resulting in smoother, youthfully rejuvenated skin.
What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?
Botox and Dysport are different brand names for similarly functioning prescription injectables. Both have been FDA approved to treat frown lines, and both have proven extremely efficacious at correcting fine lines and wrinkles in a number of other treatment areas (ie. Crow’s feet, lip creases). After assessing your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals, Dr. Katzen will help you to select the optimal wrinkle-reducing choice to fill your specific needs.
Who should administer Botox?
Because of the incredible popularity of Botox injections, patients can receive their treatments at a wide variety of locations; however, improper administration of Botox can lead to shiny foreheads, visible ripples, and an unnatural “frozen” look. For optimal results, your Botox/Dysport treatment should be performed by a skillful, board certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. J. Timothy Katzen.
When will I see the results of Botox?
The initial treatment results of Botox injections will be visible within 5-7 days following your BOTOX procedure (the exact timing depends upon how your body metabolizes the serum), and you will notice additional wrinkle-reducing improvements over the following 3-4 weeks.
Are Botox injections painful?
Because the needle utilized for injecting Botox is very small, discomfort is very minimal. Prior to injection you may elect to have the treatment area numbed with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire treatment lasts only 15-30 minutes, and you will be able resume your daily activities immediately thereafter.
What are some of the side effects from Botox?
Potential, although rare, Botox side effects include: inflammation, swelling, tenderness, redness, localized pain, infection, bruising, and/or bleeding.
Will Botox treatment prevent me from making facial expressions?
When performed by a properly trained healthcare professional, Botox treatment results are very natural, and will not radically alter your facial appearance, or prevent you from showing emotion via your facial expressions.
If I decide to stop my Botox injections, will my wrinkles come back?
If you stop using Botox treatments, your fine lines and wrinkles will gradually reappear.
How much down time will I need after my Botox treatment?
One of the greatest advantages of Botox injections is that they do not require any post-treatment downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal activities immediately following their treatment.
What aesthetic issues can Botox injections correct?
Botox injections can be utilized to treat and correct a number of problematic cosmetic issues, including, but not limited to:
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet (fine lines around the eyes)
- Sagging or creasing of the brow/forehead region
- Eyebrow asymmetry
- Drooping around the corners of the mouth
- Upper and lower lip creases
- Marionette lines
- Lip lengthening (to correct gummy smile)
- Chin softening (peach pit chin and excessive cleft)
- Facial scars
- Horizontal and vertical neck creases
- Wrinkling on the chest (décolleté)
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
What is the difference between Botox and other injectable dermal fillers (ie. Juvederm, Radiesse)?
The primary difference between Botox and injectable dermal fillers is in terms of the type of wrinkles each treatment is capable of correcting. Botox injections are performed to temporarily treat and improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by overactive facial muscles. Injectable dermal fillers improve the appearance of wrinkles caused by the breakdown of collagen and loss of facial volume.
Is Botox safe?
Botox injections have maintained an excellent safety record for over 20 years, and have a low incidence of side effects.
What causes dynamic wrinkles?
Repetitive use of our facial muscles to make expression is one of the primary causes of dynamic facial wrinkles. Additionally, factors such as the natural aging process, genetics, smoking, and sun exposure also impact the formation of dynamic wrinkles.
How long do the results of Botox injections last?
The length of time that Botox’s wrinkle-eliminating effects last varies significantly among patients, and is dependent upon the rate of each individual’s unique metabolism; however, on average, Botox results last 4-12 months, and these results can be extended with periodic maintenance injections.
