CHEMICAL PEELS FOR THE SKIN
Chemical peels (chemexfoliation, derma peeling) are non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatments that utilize chemical solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of the skin, revealing smoother, healthier looking skin. Chemical peels can be used to treat problematic skin conditions resulting from sun exposure, acne or the natural aging process, and can treat not only the face, but also the skin of the neck and hands.
Chemical peels can improve the appearance of skin conditions such as: age spots, liver spots, acne scars, freckles, acne, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, scars, sun-damaged skin, wrinkles, scaly patches, and rough skin. For optimal results, your chemical peel should be performed by a skillful, board certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. J. Timothy Katzen. Dr. Katzen takes pride in keeping abreast of the latest advances in the field of non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments, and has helped many patients revitalize their facial appearance with chemical peels at his private practice in Beverly Hills, California.
CHEMICAL PEEL PROCEDURE AND OPTIONS
During a chemical peel, chemical solutions comprised of phenol, trichloroacetic acid and alphahydroxy acids will be gently applied to your skin in order to improve your skin’s condition by removing the damaged outer layers.
There are three general strengths of chemical peels:
- Light Chemical Peel: offers subtle improvements for patients with dryness, acne, fine lines, or uneven skin pigmentation. Light peels use a combination of alphahydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids to gently exfoliate the skin, removing only the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin), and leaving the skin looking glowing and healthy. Light peel treatments may safely be repeated weekly for up to six weeks to achieve optimal results.
- Medium Chemical Peel: treats deeper wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and acne scars by removing skin cells from both the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis). Your healthcare provider will use trichloroacetic acid, sometimes used in combination with glycolic acid.
- Deep Chemical Peel: treats deeper facial wrinkles, scars, sun-damaged skin, and pre-cancerous growths with phenol, which is strong enough to penetrate to the inner (dermal) layer of the skin. For this type of peel, you may need a local anesthetic and a sedative to manage any discomfort. Deep chemical peels often involve a pre-treatment regimen with prescription strength Retin-A for up to 8 weeks in order to prepare the skin for the peel and expedite the healing process. One deep chemical peel treatment will produce dramatic results which can last upwards of 10 years.
