DR. KATZEN LIPOSUCTION FAQS
How should I prepare for liposuction surgery?
After having liposuction surgery with Dr. Katzen, you should arrange to have someone drive you home. They should assist you for the first few days after your liposuction procedure. For two weeks prior to your surgery, you should stop smoking and discontinue using products such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood thinners, as these products could increase bleeding following surgery. You should schedule approximately one week off from work in order to allow your body to heal (individual recovery periods vary depending on the type and degree of liposuction performed), and should plan to abstain from strenuous physical activity for 4-6 weeks. You will receive comprehensive pre and post-operative instructions from Dr. Katzen, and you may of course contact our office with any questions or concerns that arise.
What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?
Liposuction can be performed on any area of the body where patients would like to remove excess fat. The most common liposuction treatment areas for women include the arms, stomach, knees, neck, buttocks and thighs. Male patients generally elect to undergo liposuction for the abdomen, chest (often in conjunction with a male breast reduction), flanks, back and neck.
How long does liposuction surgery take?
The duration of your liposuction surgery will be determined by the scope and nature of your procedure, and whether or not you are having liposuction performed alone, or in conjunction with other body contouring surgery. In general, liposuction procedures are completed in 1-4 hours; however, after your initial consultation, Dr. Katzen will be able to provide you with a more accurate time frame.
Are liposuction surgery results permanent?
The fat cells that have been excised during your liposuction procedure do not repopulate unless you gain a significant amount of weight. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is the best way to ensure long-lasting results from your liposuction surgery.
What degree of scarring results from liposuction surgery?
Liposuction surgery scars tend to be very minimal, and Dr. Katzen will take care to make your incisions in the least conspicuous locations possible.
Does liposuction surgery require an overnight hospital stay?
In general, patients are able to return home the same day as their liposuction procedure, after a brief period of rest in our recovery room. However, you will need to arrange for someone else to drive you home following your surgery, because of the residual effects of the anesthesia and pain medications.
What are the risks of liposuction?
Although complications are rare, as with any surgical procedure, liposuction does carry with it potential risks, such as: bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, rippling or loose skin, infection, blood clots, unfavorable scarring, fat clots, bleeding (hematoma), skin discoloration or swelling, asymmetry, persistent swelling in the leg region, and poor wound healing.
Will liposuction surgery eliminate my cellulite (dimpling of the skin), sagging skin, and stretch marks?
Although liposuction is an effective way to eliminate stubborn fat deposits and to improve the shape and contours of your body, it is not an efficient means of treating cellulite, loose/sagging skin, or stretch marks. However, Dr. Katzen does offer alternative cosmetic enhancement procedures that specifically address these aesthetic issues, and will formulate a customized treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results.
If you have additional questions about liposuction surgery that were not answered above, please don’t hesitate to contact our office today.
