BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY BENEFITS
Breast augmentation surgery entails utilizing saline or silicone breast implants to enhance the size, shape and symmetry of the breasts. For more than six years, breast augmentation surgery has held the position as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in America, with over 286,000 procedures performed in 2012 alone. In addition to adding volume and size to the breasts, breast augmentation surgery can also correct the problem of asymmetrical breasts, where one breast is a different size from the other. Many patients seek breast augmentation following childbirth, breast feeding, or dramatic weight loss, which can all leave the breasts depleted of volume.
BREAST AUGMENTATION OPTIONS
Perhaps more than any other cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation is highly customizable, and provides patients with a number of options and choices in terms of how they would like their implants to look and feel. Basic implant options include:
- Implant type
- Silicone: the implant is pre-filled with a silicone gel closely authenticating the density and feeling of human breast tissue
- Saline: the implant is filled with a sterile salt water solution after being inserted into the body, which allows for a smaller incision
- Implant size: 120-960 cc’s (cubic centimeters)
- Implant profile: breast implant profiles specify the distance the implant will project from the body—higher profiles result in more prominent silhouettes and lower profiles implants result in less prominent silhouette.
- Implant shape:
- Teardrop (anatomical)
- Implant surface texture: Different surfaces of the breast implant can cause different risks of capsule contracture. In addition, different breast implant textures in different positions inside the breast (under or over the muscle) can have different rates of capsule contracture.
While the myriad of implant choices can feel empowering and exciting, it can also be potentially overwhelming, which is why having a qualified plastic surgeon to guide you throughout the decision-making process is so important. Dr. J. Timothy Katzen. is a knowledgeable and board certified plastic surgeon with years of experienced performing breast augmentation procedures at his private practice in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Katzen stays current with the latest advances in implant-related technology in order to provide his patients with beautiful, natural-looking results, and will patiently explain all of your breast implant options, helping you to select the optimal implant type, size, shape and profile to fulfill your aesthetic goals.
BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE
Breast augmentation surgery generally lasts 1-2 hours, and is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. In addition to the options patients have in terms of implant selection, the breast augmentation procedure itself is also customizable, and allows the surgeon to select specific implant placement and incision types depending upon the specific aesthetic goals and anatomy of each patient.
The options for breast implant placement include submuscular (under the pectoral muscle), or subglandular/submammary (behind the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscle). Breast augmentation incisions are made in one of four primary areas:
- Navel area (transumbilical)
- Below the curve of the breast (inframammary)
- Underarm region (transaxillary)
- Around the lower half of the areola (periareolar)
During your initial consultation, Dr. Katzen will select the optimal implant placement and incision type based upon your anatomy, surgical goals, and implant selection.
BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY AND RESULTS
Prior to your breast augmentation procedure, you should arrange to have someone assist you for the first few days. During the healing phase, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort. You will be prescribed pain medication. For the first week, you will be unable to drive. You will have your sutures removed approximately seven days after your surgery, and will have follow-up appointments scheduled at regular intervals in order to ensure your breasts are healing properly. On average, the recovery period for breast augmentation surgery recovery is 2-4 weeks; however, this varies considerably depending upon the capacity of each patient’s body to heal. The initial results of your breast augmentation will be immediately visible following your procedure, and will continue to improve over the next few weeks as any residual bruising and swelling decreases.
