FACELIFT SURGERY (RHYTIDECTOMY)
As we age, our delicate facial skin is subjected to a series of natural and environmental factors that produce the visible signs of aging. Some of these factors are unavoidable, and are simply part of the normal aging process such as decreasing elastin and collagen levels, thinning of the outer layer of the skin, gravity, and diminished facial volume. Other factors contributing to the visible signs of aging are environmental in nature such as sun damage, smoking, significant weight loss, repetitive facial expressions, stress, and poor sleep habits or positions. As modern medicine has helped individuals to feel better and live longer, many patients are seeking facelift procedures as a means to ensure that their exterior facial appearance reflects their inner vitality and youthfulness.
Facelift procedures are highly customizable, and come in a number of variations, which can be tailored to meet each patient’s specific aesthetic needs and goals. The general objectives of a facelift are to tighten the underlying facial tissues and musculature, revitalize the natural facial contours, eliminate surplus fat in the neck and face regions, minimize wrinkles and creases, and excise any loose or hanging skin.
Facelift surgery can correct a number of cosmetic facial problems, including, but not limited to:
- Facial ptosis (sagging)
- Residual fat pockets
- Creases beneath the lower eyelids
- Creases along the nasolabial folds
- “Jowls” or “double chin” resulting from loose skin, excess fat deposits, or loss of muscle tone
As surgical technology has evolved over time, the facelift procedure has undergone significant improvements, enabling plastic surgeons to produce more beautifully natural-looking results with substantially shortened recovery periods. Previous facelift techniques concentrated on basic skin tightening, which often caused facial features to appear distorted or pulled back too tightly. Modern facelift procedures involve deeper tissue-lifting techniques and produce a naturally refreshed, well-rested, and rejuvenated facial appearance.
Plastic Surgeon Dr. J. Timothy Katzen takes pride in keeping abreast of the latest advances in the field of cosmetic facial surgery, and has helped many of his patients rejuvenate their facial appearance with cutting edge rhytidectomy procedures at his private practice in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Katzen is a highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeon who works tirelessly to provide his patients with beautifully natural results and the shortest possible recovery periods following their facelift surgeries.
FACELIFT PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
Facelift surgery lasts between 2-5 hours and is performed using intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. During the surgery, Dr. Katzen will make incisions in front of and behind your ear, taking great care to ensure that your surgical incisions are very inconspicuous, and will then perform the necessary muscle tightening, liposuction of the face and jowls, and removal or repositioning of excess skin. The specific details of your facelift will depend upon your unique facial features and surgical objectives.
Recovery time after facelift surgery depends on your body’s capacity to heal, and the level and intensity of surgical correction performed during your surgery. During the first 24 to 48 hours, most facial swelling occurs. Elevating your head will minimize swelling. Two weeks after a facelift, most bruising is gone. Typically, after a facelift, swelling subsides in 3 to 4 weeks.
Dr. Katzen’s practice is built on the principle of surgical customization, meaning that as a patient, you will receive a unique treatment plan, tailored to reflect your specific aesthetic preferences, and designed to bring your surgical goals to fruition. Dr. Katzen and his professional staff have created a warm, welcoming office environment, where you will feel secure and comfortable throughout your facelift experience.
