Understand what spider veins really are and what you can do about them with Spider Vein Treatment in Last Vegas and Beverly Hills!
Named after their unsightly appearance of blue, red or purple spider webs, spider veins can show up anywhere on your body although they are most common in the legs. Scientifically speaking, doctors refer to spider veins as “telangiectasia,” and they are actually just dilated or swollen capillaries, a network of fine branches of blood vessels just under the surface of the skin. The good news is that in most cases, spider veins are just a minor cosmetic problem rather than an indication of any serious health issues. The cosmetic issue is fairly common and there are many people seeking Spider Vein Treatment in Las Vegas.

WHAT ARE SPIDER VEINS?
Let’s be honest, anything that starts with the word “spider” on your body is already enough to send anyone running for the hills! What in the world does “spider vein” mean? What are “spider veins”? Where is the spider and how did it get to my veins? Let us take a moment and explain how and why spider veins appear. The term “spider veins” came about because they look like blue or red spider webs. These webs are just beneath the surface of the skin and can appear anywhere on the body. Plastic surgeons call spider veins by their technical name, telangiectasia. Spider veins are the tiny little veins just under the skin, not the deeper, larger, green or dark blue veins.
Over time, pressure from deep leg veins can cause superficial blood vessels to dilate and eventually become visible. Most of this pressure builds in the lower legs. Therefore, spider veins are very common on the thighs, calves, and ankles. However, spider veins can appear anywhere, including the face and hands. As we age, spider veins have a tendency to spread. Common causes of spider veins include pregnancy, sedentary jobs, standing jobs, weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts, being female, and genetics. Over the years, many plastic surgeons have recommended a variety of methods to prevent the formation of spider veins. These treatments have included regular exercise, foot elevation to decrease pressure in the legs, and frequent use of sunscreen. While these suggestions may help, they do not necessarily guarantee the prevention of spider veins.
Spider veins may be indicative of a deeper, underlying problem. When you consult with Dr. Katzen, you and Dr. Katzen will determine if you need more work up. Further investigation may include a venous duplex ultrasound to examine the deeper veins in your legs.
Fortunately, spider veins can be completely and permanently eliminated. There are two good choices for spider vein treatment: injection and laser.
HOW DOES SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT IN BEVERLY HILLS AND LAS VEGAS WORK?
Once you have consulted with Dr. Katzen, he will create an individualized treatment plan. If your spider vein anatomy is appropriate and you elect to undergo spider vein injection, the procedure is usually performed in the office. The length of the spider vein injection procedure depends on how many spider veins are being treated. Dr. Katzen will use a local anesthetic to numb the affected area. Dr. Katzen will then inject a sclerosing solution directly into the spider vein with a tiny needle under a magnifying glass. The sclerosing solution is a chemical compound that irritates the vein. The sclerosant causes a reaction inside the spider vein causing the spider vein to clot and collapse. This destruction causes blood to stop flowing through the spider vein.
Current sclerosing agents include hypertonic saline and foam. The spider vein collapses, fades, and permanently disappears. In some cases, two to three treatments may be needed for optimal results. Once the spider vein injection procedure is completed, Dr. Katzen will cover the treated areas with a compressive dressing. If you had leg spider veins treated, you would be instructed to wear a leg compressive garment for 48 hours. After the procedure, most spider vein sclerotherapy patients can return home unattended. However, if more extensive spider veins treatment is done, you should have a friend drive you home. You are allowed to return to work the next day.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT IN BEVERLY HILLS AND LAS VEGAS?
If you and Dr. Katzen elect to undergo spider vein laser treatment in Beverly Hills or Las Vegas, this procedure can also be performed in Dr. Katzen’s office. Like injections, the length of the laser procedure depends on the number of spider veins being treated. Dr. Katzen will identify the spider veins and use a numbing agent. Dr. Katzen will then use a special laser to melt the spider vein permanently. The spider vein laser is of a particular wavelength that it passes safely through the skin without damaging surrounding structures. Hemoglobin within passing red blood cells in the spider veins absorbs the laser light. The absorption of this laser energy is intense. The absorption of laser light is so intense that it heats and explodes the red blood cells within the spider vein. This thermal explosion causes the spider vein to collapse and close.
You may experience some mild discomfort through the spider vein laser procedure, but it is relatively pain-free. Spider vein laser treatment may feel like a rubber band snapping on your skin. After your spider vein laser procedure, you will have some mild bruising for one to two weeks. Dr. Katzen will provide you with compression garments to wear for approximately one week. Depending on the amount of anesthetic used, you are allowed to return to work right after the procedure. Like spider vein injections with sclerosants, several treatments with the laser may be necessary to eradicate all of your spider veins permanently.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT IN BEVERLY HILLS AND LAS VEGAS?
After your vein procedure, some mild pain, swelling, and bruising is expected. Usually, the achiness resolves in one or two days. Typically, pain is treated with Tylenol. Once your vein procedure is complete, Dr. Katzen and his staff will show you how to care properly for the treated areas and what to expect during your recovery.
